Summary
In our fast-moving world, information comes at a breakneck pace, and each moment we create more and more of it. Historical information released from archives can now be shared globally. Information holds the key to cybersecurity, business, and even our own health. With Illinois, we are educating leaders in the information professions, shaping the way information is produced, analyzed, and preserved. We are a world leader in library and information science education, research, and practice. Our school is consistently named the top library and information science (LIS) school in the nation, based on national rankings of accredited master’s degree programs. We are known for creating pioneering and innovative educational opportunities, including the oldest existing LIS doctoral program in the country, our award-winning online learning program, and an advanced degree in digital libraries—all advancements aimed at propelling bright minds. Our faculty addresses key challenges at the intersection of people, information, and technology, and have a unique perspective on how information science can change the world for the better. With global leaders across many sectors and disciplines, we offer practiced insights from elementary schools to healthcare, community organizations, corporations, higher education, and public libraries. A new generation of students, serving humanity by harnessing the power of information, is what our world needs. With Illinois, we see information as a way to empower people to make wise decisions and live in a free and open society. Together we will shape the future of libraries and information.
Priorities
Offering an Accessible Education
We value collaboration. We value access. We value the people who come together to make this place exceptional. Our top priority is to offer more tuition scholarships to support students and improve our efforts to provide inclusive educational opportunities.
Enriching the Student Experience
Donor support will allow us to provide funding for additional student enrichment activities, such as internships, conference travel, and study abroad. These immersive student experiences and programs enrich the educational experience and provide a strong practical foundation for our graduates.
Providing Faculty Support
Our faculty are prolific scholars, creative thinkers, and fearless intellectual pioneers. Gifts in support of our faculty provide lasting sustainable impact on future generations. With that in mind, we aim to increase the resources available to our faculty in support of teaching and research and complete the funding for our Endowed Chair in the History of Libraries and the Information Professions.
