College of Law

Celebrating the impact of your generosity

Dear Friends,

The completion of my seventh year as dean coincides with the conclusion of the university’s With Illinois capital campaign. I’m delighted to report that the campaign was a terrific success, both for the UIUC campus and for the College of Law. The report that follows provides several snapshots to highlight the impact that the campaign is having and will continue to have on crucial areas of College of Law operations and excellence—to support students and faculty through scholarships and professorships, to upgrade our facility and modernize our technology, and to invest in a wide range of programmatic innovations. Thanks to your gifts, pledges and bequests, we raised more than $57 million–or 143% of our $40 million goal–and I couldn’t be more grateful!

Throughout my career in legal education, I’ve always held the University of Illinois College of Law in high regard. But it wasn’t until I started meeting our alumni that I realized the prominence, achievements and generosity of the Illinois Law network across the state and from coast to coast. THANK YOU for all that you’ve done over the past seven years, and for your continued support in the years to come.

The Pledge of Professionalism at New Student Orientation

The beginning of each academic year is highlighted by the arrival of our newest class. New student orientation includes the recitation of the Pledge of Professionalism. The induction of the Class of 2024 contributed to the continued rise of the academic profile at the College of Law, made possible in large part due to increased scholarship support.

The Kimball R. and Karen Gatsis Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism

In the spring of 2021, a $5,000,000 commitment established the Kimball R. and Karen Gatsis Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism and represents the largest non-deferred gift in the history of the College of Law. Mr. Anderson stated, “A strong need exists to better equip the next generation of lawyers with advocacy skills and an understanding of the professional responsibility obligations attendant to client advocacy. We hope that our gift will enable the University of Illinois College of Law to lead the country in these critical disciplines.”

Professor Ralph Brubaker invested as the James H.M. Sprayregen Professor of Law

In April of 2022, The College of Law celebrated the investiture of Professor Ralph Brubaker as the inaugural James H.M. Sprayregen Professor of Law at the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. Upon establishing the fund, Mr. Sprayregen stated, “I am pleased to help support the law school; particularly the teaching of restructuring. I am honored in playing my small part in following a legacy of many other U of I College of Law graduates in giving back to the school that launched my legal career. I am hopeful this will be helpful to the education of many students going forward.” Professor Brubaker and Mr. Sprayregen are pictured with student members of the Bankruptcy Law Society.

The Prentice H. Marshall Advocacy Suite

Extensive renovations to the College of Law building were completed during the With Illinois campaign, including a new roof, mechanical and life safety upgrades, and technology upgrades to each classroom. The Prentice H. Marshall Advocacy Suite was the last project during the campaign, repurposing a seldom-used space in the Library to a second courtroom and modular classroom to serve a variety of academic and co-curricular needs. Several artifacts donated by the Marshall family adorn the exterior of the suite.
